Materials Testing

Whether your company develops a new material, a new process, or simply needs to update your current pneumatic or bagging system to reach production goals; material testing at Magnum Systems (Smoot and Taylor Products) can help provide a guideline and support to make that happen. When material is tested a comprehensive report is generated to determine material characteristics such as transfer rate, air consumption, pick-up and terminal velocities, product degradation, a sieve analysis, and flow characteristics.

Once a material is tested and a report is generated on your product, our trained sales staff along with our engineering department will design a custom material handling system or make recommendations to meet your needs. You are encouraged to witness your material test as well as to retain samples for future comparison. We have two test facilities: the Smoot pneumatic conveying test center is located in Kansas City, Kansas, and the Taylor Products bag weighing / filling test center is located in Parsons, Kansas.

Smoot Test Lab Equipment

The newly designed Smoot lab has the capabilities to perform the following tests:

  • Bulk Bag Unloading using a vacuum system:
This test has 60 feet of 3-inch, 11-gauge tube with six elbows that can feed one of two scale hoppers.
  • Bulk Bag Filling Test:
This test can be performed in many ways. It can be fed directly from the Bulk Bag Unloading station or through either the dilute or dense convey lines.
  • Dilute Pneumatic Test:
We have both vacuum and pressure testing capabilities. The convey line is 3-inch, 11-gauge tube with seven elbows in either a 130-foot or a 260-foot loop that is transferred to a scale hopper.
  • Dense Pneumatic Test:
We have both vacuum and pressure testing capabilities. The convey line is 3-inch Sch 40 pipe with seven elbows in either a 130-foot or a 260-foot loop that is transferred to a scale hopper.
  • Custom Testing and Set-up:
We have a wide variety of equipment that can be used to create a custom set-up for testing when needed. These are primarily external hoppers and small-scale equipment test for contaminant sensitive materials. This test is performed on an as needed basis.

The amount of material required for each test varies and our Test Lab Manager will help determine the quantities needed.
