Smoot Company’s Roots in Pneumatic Conveying

Smoot Company began as a provider of pneumatic conveying systems in Kansas City, Kansas in 1960. With a long history comes a long list of patented industrial systems, including the Airlift Railcar Discharge Adapter, Rotary Airlock Cavity Purge system, the Slide Diverter Valve and our recent ECO Phase Pneumatic Conveying System, patented in 2013.

Today, Smoot, a brand of Magnum Systems, is a leading provider of pneumatic conveying systems and components. These include dense and dilute phase pneumatic conveying systems and railcar and truck unloading. Smoot’s systems can handle some of the most abrasive materials in the world. Our engineering and service staff have the application knowledge and experience to deliver successful designs and installations around the world.

What Type of Conveying Equipment Do You Need?

Typically most applications fall into these parameters when needing to convey a bulk solid material.

Distance Guidelines for Conveying: 

  • Under 50 feet – Mechanical Conveying: Augers, U-Troughs, Vibratory, AeroMechanical or small venturi based pneumatic system.
  • 50 to 600 feet with a few turns – Pneumatic Conveying: Dilute Phase, Dense Phase
  • Over 1,000 feet – Mechanical Conveying: usually Belt or Drag Chain

Conveying Rate Guidelines: 

  • Under 1,000 pounds/hour – Mechanical Conveying or Venturi system
  • 1,000 to 80,000 pounds/hour – Pneumatic Conveying
  • 80,000+ pounds/hour – Mechanical Conveying
